Watson's Caring Theory on Postpartum Disorder Essay
Watson's Caring Theory on Postpartum Disorder - Essay Example The idea is to inform nursing practice and to ensure the best possible care for patients. This paper will explore Jane Watsonââ¬â¢s philosophy and science of caring theory. The structure of this paper will begin with the description of the medical condition and is followed by a discussion of the nursing theory and its application. Medical Condition: The Postpartum Disorder The postpartum depression also called as Baby Blues (depending on the severity of the condition) was one of the topics considered for this paper along with other conditions relating to newborn infants. The decision to focus on the disorder stem from the fact that it is quite prevalent but often left untreated or undiagnosed, hence, often misunderstood from the point of view of healthcare providers. Recent statistics show that at least 400,000 women in the United States suffer from postpartum disorder annually and that one in four first time mothers experience the illness (Johnson, 2003, p.141). According to Rose nfield (2006), "after their follow-up gynecologist examination, the only contact most women will have with medical providers during the postpartum year is at their baby's well child examination," and that "the concept of pediatricians screening for postpartum depression has not caught on widely so diagnosis at these visits is unlikely" (p.61). In addition, postpartum symptoms are often considered subclinical, cross-cultural and are associated or misunderstood as other medical and psychological conditions such as "marital dissatisfaction, lack of social support, personality characteristics, family history of depression, and autoimmune thyroid disease" (Cooper, 2007, p.35). So what exactly is postpartum disorder? To illustrate the experience, severity and trends about postpartum disorder, a mother's experience and view is cited below: PPP (postpartum psychosis) was the worse experience of my life... I lost the joy of new motherhood. I lost "me" for the first two years of my daughter's life and even longer to put the pieces together (Twomey, 2009, p.xv). The above account demonstrates the impact of postpartum disorder. This is highlighted by the fact that, for years, the condition has been largely ignored. Today, it is considered and widely known as a mental disease that could endanger the lives of both the mother and the baby. There is no specific or standard definition for postpartum disorder. This is at least true according to the available literature on the subject. There are those who identify the depression experienced by women after giving birth as the basic symptom for the disorder. Out of these, Taeusch et al., (2005) offered a comprehensive definition by explaining that postpartum depression is characterized by "significant distress or impairment in all areas of functioning" that are not medically induced or caused by a loss of a loved one (p.96). Heath further cited that the disorder manifests within 3 to 6 months after giving birth (p.96). Some studie s have recorded longer periods such as the previous example cited by Twomey. Postpartum disorder is classified into several types. The classification, which varies according to researcher or expert, is commonly based on the degree of its severity. For the purposes set by this paper, Ahuja's (1999) classification will be used, which categorized postpartum disorder into three. These are: 1) Type I: Postpartum psychosis also known as brief reactive psychosis; 2) Type II: Adjustment reaction with depressed mood (e.g. postpartum
Rusting Process Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Rusting Process - Essay Example This is due to the need of replacing corroded metal tools and structures to preserve functionality and safety (Roberge; Lancashire). The rusting process is a complex reaction involving various stages upon the contribution of different compounds and production of derivatives. Rusting is an electrochemical process that occurs in the presence of water or moisture and source of electrolyte. This process cannot proceed to any considerable extent if any of the said requirements is not present. When the metal is in the air, there should be more than 50% relative humidity while above 80% relative humidity results to severe rusting of bare metal (Lancashire 3). Above are the conditions that are conducive to corrosion of metals but the reason behind why metals or any other substance corrode in the first place need to be answered. Corrosion is an opportunity for metals to deteriorate. Metals like most substances need to undergo this process to be able to combine electrochemically with other substances in order to form new compounds. Many environmental conditions provide this opportunity and places with high moisture or relative humidity is one of these conditions, called rusting, although corrosion occurs when metal come into contact with various chemicals such as acids, bases, ammonia gas and other vapors and substances (Roberge). A model (Figure 1) illustrates the chemical process that occurs during rusting. The first stage of the process is called anodic reaction. During this stage, the metal dissolves by generating electrons as shown in the upper portion of the model. The second stage is called cathodic reaction, during which the electrons that were produced in the first stage are then consumed. These two stages of the rusting process can occur adjacently or far apart (Roberge). Figure 1. A schematic representation of the rusting process showing the generation and consumption of electrons (from Corrosion Doctors). There are six chemical reactions that occur during the rusting process. First is the oxidation of the iron (Fe) which has come into contact with moisture or water droplet. The second chemical reaction involves the formation of water from the absorption by dissolved oxygen of the electrons produced from the first reaction. The third chemical reaction includes the generation of hydrogen gas through the consumption of electrons by hydrogen ions. The fourth chemical reaction is the production of the insoluble iron or rust through the reaction of hyrdroxide ions with ferric ions. Another reaction involves the production of rust from the combination of hydrogen ions and oxygen with iron ions. And another chemical process includes the formation of rust through the formation of iron hydroxides with the interaction between hydroxide irons with iron ions (Tarr). The first chemical reaction is illustrated by the following process (Fig. 2). This chemical reaction occurs when water moisture comes into contact with a metal surface. The solid iron or Fe(s) oxidizes in the presence of water to produce aqueous iron or Fe2+(aq), producing two free electrons (Baldragon Academy). Figure 2. Oxidation of iron. The second reaction is the formation of water through consumption of electrons by hydrogen ions and dissolved oxygen as shown by Figure 3. Four electrons (e) are absorbed by four hydrogen

DisciplineThief - Essay Example It is significant to understand that foodstuff is important for the development of the human body. This is a very great problem because the clinic may lose its credits and this is very wrong. When the company does not perform as expected by the general society, there is a likely possibility that it will fail. On the societal front, it is very difficult for a society to move ahead with these amounts of crime. Criminals are not well perceived in any society because these petty crimes are the ones that lead to even greater and more harmful crimes. Therefore, it is paramount to understand the best means through which to get rid of this vice in the company. The reason for eliminating this crime is that despite the fact that it does not hold a direct effect on a person it has indirect effects. There is also the analysis of the problem that is very effective in ensuring that it is completely eliminated. In this case, the most important step to take is understanding the major causes of the problems. The reason as to why the employees feel inclined to steal from the company is the laxity in the management of the organization. As witnessed, the chief accountant is a regular drunk that makes him an easy target from the manner in which he is not always aware of the activities in the company (Osland, 1997). A major cause of the problem is the attitude of the accountant. The accountant is rather harsh to the employees and this is from the manner in which he even addresses them. This is a reason that may make the employees get a sense of rebellion and want not to feel intimidated. They carry out their rebellion by going against the clinicââ¬â¢s principles and deciding to steal. Maria also caused the problem by simply trying to appear nice to her fellow employees by offering them free foodstuff. This is a common problem because there are people that naturally feel the need to gain popularity and the best manner through which to do this is

Monetary Policy Wages, Markets and Income Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Monetary Policy Wages, Markets and Income - Essay Example As asserted by Woodruff, the real interest rate is defined as the interest rate minus the rate of inflation in the economy. Viewing it in another way, interest rate, specifically the nominal interest rate, is the real interest rate plus the inflation. The nominal interest rate is what is actually applied to my mortgage or loan application. With this, it becomes evident that an increase in inflation brings about an increase in interest rate. As such, should I perceive that inflation is relatively during a particular period, then I may defer my decision to apply for a loan or mortgage until inflation has been curbed as expected by economic agencies. This would generally lessen my cost of borrowing given the resulting lower interest rate. Relative to inflation, Woodruff also noted that leading inflation indicators should be watched. These key reports include those on unemployment rate, employment cost index (ECI), GDP, consumer price index (CPI) and producer price index (PPI). The employment reports of the Department of Labor are deemed as the "harbinger of inflation." This is because of the perceived inverse relation between inflation and unemployment rate, meaning with a lower unemployment rate-an uptick in inflation is expected.

Globalisation and International Politics - Essay Example Fortunately, the poor countriesââ¬â¢ debt relief deal by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (Rosenberg, 2005, 45), has been one among the significant changes, which have resulted from the strong protests and demonstrations, linked to international political economy. Adding to that, the workability of markets has not been up to the expectations of many key players in the markets. For instance, the past few years have marked significant progress for many nations in terms of progress, while some states have had their development deteriorate. In some cases, the progress in development of some nations has altered within a small margin over the past few years, as the political economies of such state has been affected by globalisation in small extents. All the happenings in the past few years have seen the challenging of institutions, strategies and beliefs. As an example, the functionality of the institutions concerned with the economic governance at the global platform and the development doctrines that are internationally accepted have faced attacks from the western economists (Stiglitz, 2003, 97). At the same time, global issues have pressurised the urge of addressing the big problems that have prevailed in Africa over the past few years. ... The term is mostly associated with the economic aspect, which involves the production of services and goods, and how they are distributed ââ¬â the progress in reducing the factors that inhibit trade internationally. Such factors often include import quotas, the export fees and tariffs (Sepulchre, Arcak & Teel, 2002, 524). Thus, globalisation defines the process by which national economies integrate increasingly, to global economy. On the other hand, the term ââ¬Ëpolitical economyââ¬â¢ refers to the study of how goods and services are produced, bought and sold (Amoore, 2000, 72), and how these processes relate with the government, custom and law. These processes also relate with how the wealth and income of a nation are distributed. The term owes its origin to the moral philosophy, and has grown over time to be the study of the statesââ¬â¢ economies. Globalisation and the political economy have interconnections to the sense that, in the present world, most issues surround ing globalisation are politically oriented, and thus, globalisation is a major factor in the political economy. Globalisation plays a vital role in shaping the international political economy in a diverse spectrum. Ways in which Globalisation Shapes International Political Economy In the better internalisation of the basic organisation of our societies, the strong interrelation between wealth and power has been a critical factor. For the past few years, the richness in the political economy has been unveiled by international relations. Currently, the international relations are a key issue that explains the operation and evolution of the economy of the present world (Dilip, 2001, 168). The relations often include public policy shaping, the steps taken by regulatory systems and

The company operates in an oligopolistic market str ucture, one where there is only a small handful of air travel carriers. In this type of market, competitive rivalry dictates the majority of strategic business decision-making in which the organisation must be adaptable and flexible to changing market conditions and competitive behaviours. In 2011, Air Asia sustained revenues of US $1.62 billion (Air Asia 2012). The company operates as Air Asia and also under different subsidiary brands, including Air Asia X, Air Asia India, Air Asia Japan, Philippines Air Asia, Thai Air Asia, and Indonesia Air Asia. This makes the company a legitimately multi-national organisation, one which must work with distinct regional social cultures in a very diverse employment model. Cultural differences make training and development critical in order for Air Asia to maintain its positive brand reputation and ensure that the organisational structure operates much like a cohesive, family-oriented unit. The companyââ¬â¢s mission is ââ¬Å"to be the best co mpany to work for whereby employees are treated as part of a big familyâ⬠(Air Asia 2013, p.2). Film, Culture and Society Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Film, Culture and Society - Movie Review Example (Sklar, 1994) Perhaps the reason why Depp has attracted a lot of attention outside his film could be because of his charming personality. He reports to interviews with a cigar in hand and then says hallo to all the members surrounding of the camera crew. Additionally, the actor is quite comfortable with his own personality because he is not afraid of experimenting with fashion. The actor can wear boots that were synonymous with the nineteen eighties and still hold his head high. Depp tops this up with his good looks and makes many Hollywood enthusiasts interested in his escapades. Besides these, Depp is quite enterprising; he owns a club called Viper Room in the heart off Hollywood. But then again, the tabloids reported that this place has more drugs than soda. Speaking of escapades, Depp has had his share of dramatic scenes in his personal life. He was reported by some newspaper reporters that he had trashed hotel. As if this is not enough he has had some drug addiction issues in the past but this does not stop the public from loosing interest in his new developments. Maybe it is these negative remarks that keep the public anxious. (Shatz, 2002) Fellow actors such as Penelope Cruz have asserted that Depp is quite a humorous man. He is indeed natural and charismatic at the same time. They claim that this is the most outstanding feature about him and this could also be the reason why he has been in and out of relationships. Johnny Depp's' films Johnny Depp has contributed to the film industry in his own unique way. However, some critics argue that he is not an actor worth his salt. This can be attributed to some of the headless horsemen movies he has done in the past. These movies undermined the strength of Depp's acting abilities. However, these arguments pale when one examines other films done by Depp. For instance the films; 'Before Night Falls' and 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' did very well in the box office. The one thing they both had in common was the fact that Johnny Depp was the main character. He seems to have an ability to carry heavy roles with the depth they deserve. Taking an example of the movie 'Blow'; Depp plays the role of a tough, fearless and tragic drug dealer. Depp was chosen for this role because he has the capacity to bring out the negative aspects in the lead role. On the other hand, this does not undermine the fact that he still displays the tragic end to the movie with the compassion and dignity it deserves. Depp chooses his film roles carefully as most of them depict central characters. Conclusion Johnny Depp is a charismatic, humorous and striking person in real life. This larger-than-life off -screen character has influenced the level of success and hence his stardom. (Neve, 1992) The issues going on behind the camera have adversely affected the roles played in front of the camera in terms of the offers presented to Depp. After assessing Depp's life; controversy is indeed a marketing tool in Hollywood as Depp only became truly famous after people started following up his private life. Success of Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge as a postmodernist film Introduction The essay will examine the extent to which Baz Luhrmann's the Moulin Rouge film has depicted postmodernism with a specific focus on Parody /pastiche.
